Help me choose a beach on the Jersey Shore

My family is considering a trip to either the Jersey Shore or one of the beaches in Maryland in late August or early September. We%26#39;ve never been to the area and are having a hard time figuring out which beach would be best for us. In the past we have vacationed in Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, NC and loved it there. We%26#39;re from upstate NY and we%26#39;re hoping for a shorter drive to our beach vacation this year, which is why we%26#39;re looking at either the New Jersey or Maryland beaches.

We would like to rent a home/duplex/condo that is not part of a high-rise or large complex. It MUST be oceanfront/beachfront and have internet service. We want to be able to walk out the back door and be on the beach without crossing any roads. We prefer quiet, clean beaches over crowded, hustle-and-bustle vacation areas. We will have our car and are more than happy to drive to anything we might want to see. We%26#39;ll prepare most of our meals ourselves but it would be great to be near a nice seafood market so we can buy fresh seafood.

If anyone here has been to Carolina Beach or Kure Beach you%26#39;ll know exactly what we%26#39;re looking for -- just a nice, clean, quiet beach vacation where the kids can play in the water and the adults can enjoy the sun and sand and peace and quiet.

Thanks for any suggestions!

If you find a beach area like that on the Jersey shore....let me know.

You might be a candidate for one of the beaches in Long Beach Island. Check with a local realtor there, and don%26#39;t wait too long as summer weeks sell out fast.

Good luck,

On Long Beach Island, look to Holgate on the southern tip of the island. There are many beach front homes that rent both through agencies or by owner. There is little commercial activity on that end of the island, but the commercial section of Beach Haven is probably only a little more than two miles north. In addition there is nice playground on the Beach Haven/Holgate border that kids love. The neighborhood is a great area for biking, kite flying, sunsets over the bay etc. Some listings refer to this area as ';South Beach Haven%26#39;';, I assume for marketing purposes.

For example look here:www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p121896 or here:

Also on Long Beach Island if you look toward the northern end of the Island, Loveladies, North Beach there is also less commercial development, but you definitely need beach front as there are some beach access issues. Those communities will probably more much more expensive than Holgate.

Another forum for LBI that you may wish to peruse if you consider LBI is www.lbi.net

In NJ, probably tiny Strathmere, Avalon, or Stone Harbor would be your best bets, but still way more commercial than what you%26#39;re used to.

In DE, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach or Fenwick Island would be worth a look.

No problem finding the accomodations you%26#39;re after in any of these, but ';quiet'; %26amp; ';crowded'; are relative terms. These are beach resorts %26amp; far from deserted in the warm months. Early September (after schools are back in session) would be way less crowded (and less expensive) than the end of August. IMO, that%26#39;s the best time to go.

Long Beach Island or north or south Outer Banks (NC)would perhaps be better for you than any of the above.

A great place to stay where it%26#39;s quiet but in short driving distance to fun attractions is Brigantine Beach. It%26#39;s a small island right next to Atlantic City. The beaches are clean and beautiful, the town is small and low key (and there is an Acme supermarket and a great market for seafood called Brigantine Seafood) and yet it is close to AC, Ocean City, which is great for families (boardwalk, amusements) and within driving distance (45 minutes) to Wildwood and Cape May. There are many houses right on the beach, or within a block of the beach that are easily walkable ( I%26#39;ve walk it with my children since they were toddlers). I%26#39;ve been vacationing there since I was a baby and just love it.

You might like something like this:

We own a home 5 houses from the beach which is already rented for the entire summer (we use it in September), but there are houses right on the beach. Ocean beach also has a ';Bay Club'; a few blocks from the beach, which you are also allowed to use when you rent.

There are several nice restuarants a five minute ride away and you are halfway between the Seaside Heights (10 minutes away) and Pt. Pleasant (15 minutes) Boardwalks. July 4th is nice with fireworks on the beach.

If you do decide to stay here, I can recommend several really good restuarants.

I don%26#39;t know if you will see this before or while your in Brigantine but Brigantine Seafood is located at 3312 W. Brigantine Ave. between 33rd and 34th streets. There is also a really good seafood restaurant next to it called Hooper%26#39;s.
